CB100: Rolling Chassis!

With 2 new CB100 top fork bolts in hand, had another go using the S90 forks.

Worked as expected, though didn't cinch everything down very tight.  At first, installed it with the S90 front wheel but then decided to test the CB100 front wheel/hub/axle but still using the early S90 forks.

Realized that the CB100 has the single diameter front axle but the early S90 forks would use the double diameter version.

So... either need to use late S90 forks (which are probably closer to the correct 1971 version) or just use the S90 front axle but with the CB100 wheel.

Unboxed the new tank and gave it a gentle clean.  Added the cheap eBay cafe seat and also the soft center stand spring.

And we have a rolling chassis!  Very cool to have her standing up on her own.  Kinda looks great with all the empty space in the frame.  Will need to preserve that as much as possible.

Birthday Garage: CB100 Frame Unboxing!

Birthday Garage Session!

Special treat: unboxing the new 1971 CB100 frame (#201575)

$60 on eBay plus $114 shipping.

Frame seems in good enough shape and also included the main stand and the steering head.

The center stand pipe actually wouldn't fit neatly through, seemed to be hanging up because the end had been deformed (someone probably hammered it out).  Had to file it down quite a bit before it fit.

Also testing out the new folding table (personal bday present from Home Depot), which worked a treat.

CB100 Engine Cases

A brand new era begins!

Unboxing the new CB100 cases.  Came with the right-side clutch cover and a decent looking jug.

However, broke a couple fins during shipping.

Big Bore!

Got the Big Bore kit back from DRATV (Beatrice Cycle).  Bored out to 53.50mm (leaving that extra .5mm for the future.

Kit comes with the 5 piece ring set, wrist pin & circlips, and also a thicker copper gasket you need to use because the piston's a bit taller.

I also got the racing camshaft.

Does this go into Red, or do we build a whole new bike around it?

Garage: Pot Luck

Little bit of everything today...

Half day PTO but once I got downstairs, realized I was "between jobs" and nothing big to do.

Unfortunately, the $60 straight pipe was a no-go.  I think it may be made for an Early head, but even then, not quite sure where the mounting point actually attaches.  Well, maybe I can reshape it for a Late head one day.

Stymied on removing the old stud bolts from the Ivy motor, too.  Got the stud remover tool, but in order to really crank down and lock the teeth, I need a wrench that opens up to 31mm and the one I have fell just short of that.

Ivy's exhaust valve cap was leaking, so swapped it out with Roxy's.

Did some parts auditing.  Updated the M3 Hot Box parts.  Also updated all the locations of the cylinder jugs to be correct.

Upstairs, unboxed all the new parts I'd been accumulating.  Have a total of 2 new cranks, 4 new shift spindles and 2 more kickstarts.

Noting the differences between the shift spindles.  Thought that the distance between the prongs mattered but in testing it didn't seem to.  Left with 1 bad one that can't find second for some reason.  Then one of the new ones has a bent shaft that jams when inserted.  Probably fixable.  But still left with 3 good ones.

Stymied trying to install the new Dime City shift pedal, only because it has a clearance issue with the step bar.  But have a couple options for stepbars (Ivy's and Evie's) so will need to do some swapping around and see what works.

Red: Clutch Cable Lube

Love it when the easiest fix works.  Lubed the clutch cable old-school style using fork oil and now it's buttery smooth.

Also unboxed the new H4 headlight from Dime City.

Garage: Organization Day, Unbox New Frames

Unboxed the two new frames, the black and "turquoise" (?) one.

Realized that along with the white, I know have one of each of the three versions sitting naked in the garage.

Turquoise frame is in fantastic shape.  Super, super clean.

Run Red Run: Head Cover

As predicted, once I had the head cover bolted down, the camshaft went in easily.

Added more gaskets, including the clutch cover.  Took an hour to painstakingly peel the old one off with razor blade and decal scraper.

Also tested mating the new header pipe with the muffler.  Fitting was no problem, but disappointed to discover that the edge is cracked off the header where it meets the exhaust port.  Wondering if that will have any effect on performance.

Thinking to test it on Roxy...

Unboxing the New Frame

First look at the new frame.  She's in pretty bad shape, but still... a numbered frame, and they're not getting easier to find.

Verified the last number of the frame number: 444-526

Seems like she'll end up with the nickname of Vee for "fifth"?

Run Red Run: Taillight Unbox

Unboxed the new taillight.  Was in decent shape, though needs a sanding and repaint eventually.

Found that the bulb was good, but only the taillight was working when wired up and even then it was spotty.  The brake light wasn't coming on at all.

Ended up bending the tabs in the housing upwards so that they'd make more contact with the bulb and that seemed to do the trick.

But then found that you can't ground to the mount itself because of the paint... but if that's true, then how was it supposed to work.  Realized it was a lot easier and more reliable to just add a separate dedicated ground wire.

Also built up and installed the clutch on the model engine.
