Odd Jobs

Installed a new steering lock on Astrid, so I can street park her when necessary.

Tested the chain breaker, grinding down the post with the Dremel first.  Popped the link out easily.

Weird thing testing the baffle.
  • Earlier, I had started and run Red like usual, no problems.
  • Maybe 30 mins later I installed the baffle
  • I started her and she started ok, but then stuttered and died
  • Kicked a few times to try to restart and she wouldn't
  • Then removed the baffle, but still wouldn't start.  Kept kicking.
  • Swapped the battery after a few minutes of trying and a few kicks later she started
I think the battery swap was a red herring.  I think the baffle choked the engine off and then the subsequent kicking flooded the engine.  Gonna forget the baffle for now...

Red: Wiring Day

Installed the new speedo from Dime City.  Installing it the "right" way felt like it stuck up way too high, so switched to mounting it at the lowest point possible on the brace, which looks a lot better.

Then wired up the taillight, the horn, the red speedo LED oil light as the ignition light.

Used the trick of pulling wires through the frame using a string attached to the end.

Installed clutch cable.

Red: Rear Brake Solved

Figured out the rear brake issue... sort of.  Realized I could just put it on "halfway" and then crank down the bolt.  Will replace it eventually but should be ok for now.

Red: Rear Brake Stymied

Delayed entry (a month later...)

Tried to install the rear brake arm only to realize that because the brake lug would move into the hub when you pushed it, I could never get the arm to fully engage.

Installed the brake switch and totally lucked out as I pushed the wires into the frame hole and they magically appeared in the battery box with no fuss.

Tested sticking a metal plate to the frame with a magnet for a grounding point.
