CB100: Rolling Chassis!

With 2 new CB100 top fork bolts in hand, had another go using the S90 forks.

Worked as expected, though didn't cinch everything down very tight.  At first, installed it with the S90 front wheel but then decided to test the CB100 front wheel/hub/axle but still using the early S90 forks.

Realized that the CB100 has the single diameter front axle but the early S90 forks would use the double diameter version.

So... either need to use late S90 forks (which are probably closer to the correct 1971 version) or just use the S90 front axle but with the CB100 wheel.

Unboxed the new tank and gave it a gentle clean.  Added the cheap eBay cafe seat and also the soft center stand spring.

And we have a rolling chassis!  Very cool to have her standing up on her own.  Kinda looks great with all the empty space in the frame.  Will need to preserve that as much as possible.

CB100: Wheel Swap Test

Not the best session.  Found that the metal race doesn't actually seem to fit the bottom of the CB100 steering head.  Had to go with old fashioned loose ball bearings.

Also discovered that S90 fork bolts are way too short to use with the CB100 bridge.  Was cinching up the left fork using the temporary long 10mm bolt and ended up wedging the top of the fork into the bottom of the bridge.  Had to use a hammer to knock it out.

Rear wheel installed with no issue, but it's a no go on the front until I can figure out the fork situation.

CB100: Rear Wheel Check

Checking new rear axle on swingarm.  CB100 is longer and thicker than S90 version.

CB100 New Parts

First steps toward a rolling chassis.

New parts:

  • Swingarm (with brake stay)
  • Top and bottom engine mounts
  • Engine bolts
  • Step bar

Swingarm is in good shape and fits the frame.  Looks like the distance between the forks is much wider than the S90 so won't be able to use that rear wheel.  But S90 cushions do fit (at least the mountings, need to check if the length is correct).

Engine mounting plates also fit.  But when fitting the bottom end, found that the two front holes won't line up well enough to get both bolts in.  So left it with the top bolt in.  Think I'd just need to open up the hole on the mount a tiny bit to make it fit, but will leave it for another day.

Discovered that the top mount also has the mounting holes for the ignition coil.

Also first time using the new TSTAK rolling cart, which worked fantastically both to roll the drawers around but also as a garage stool.

Birthday Garage: CB100 Frame Unboxing!

Birthday Garage Session!

Special treat: unboxing the new 1971 CB100 frame (#201575)

$60 on eBay plus $114 shipping.

Frame seems in good enough shape and also included the main stand and the steering head.

The center stand pipe actually wouldn't fit neatly through, seemed to be hanging up because the end had been deformed (someone probably hammered it out).  Had to file it down quite a bit before it fit.

Also testing out the new folding table (personal bday present from Home Depot), which worked a treat.

CB100 Engine Cases

A brand new era begins!

Unboxing the new CB100 cases.  Came with the right-side clutch cover and a decent looking jug.

However, broke a couple fins during shipping.
